12 Public Holidays for Romanians Starting 2017

The Romanian Government has recently added 2 more public holidays to the existing 10. These are the 24th of January (celebration of the Union of the 2 Romanian regions, Moldavia and Valachia, realized on the 24th of January 1856) and the 1st of June, celebrated as Child’s Day.


All in all, there are now 12 public holidays according to Romanian labour law :

2 Jan Mon 2nd New Year’s Day
24 Jan Tue Union Day
16 Apr Sun Easter Day
17 Apr Mon 2nd Day of Easter
1 May Mon Labour Day
1 Jun Thu Child’s Day
15 Aug Tue Saint Mary
30 Nov Thu Saint Andrew
1 Dec Fri National Day
25 Dec Mon Christmas Day
26 Dec Tue 2nd Day of Christmas

In case one of the days above has been a working day for an employee, the Romanian Labour Code stipulates that he / she is entitled to two days-off (in the account of one public holiday) or, if not possible, being paid double the salary for that specific day.
